Road safety: weigh bridge Mikumi Tanzania

SDC’s involvement in road safety was always one of the main objective throughout all phases of the Road Sector Support Programme.

Among activities supported include, overloading controls, road safety awareness campaigns, collection and analysis of accident data on main roads, speed control measures and installation of road safety gadgets.

One of the major problems as regards to road safety has been overloading of commercial vehicles. In view of this, SDC agreed to finance construction a permanent weigh-bridge in Mikumi.

Representative Results

  • Over the period SDC as successfully supported the following road safety activities:
  • Vehicle speed control equipment to regional traffic police office for speed control
  • Support to collection and analysis of accident data including equipment (computer)
  • Procurement of mobile axle load weigh bridge and financing of overloading control exercises
  • Installation of traffic signs on main roads including regional roads
  • Support to training and public awareness campaigns to the public, TANROADS Regional manager’s staff, schools and other road users (pedestrian, non-motorised traffic etc)
  • Construction of Mikumi Permanent Weigh-bridge Station:
  • Construction commenced in March 2003, and to be completed in October 2003, at a total cost of about US$ 0.8 million including design, supervision and construction costs
  • It is expected that about 11,000 vehicles per month will be weighed at the station

Important Findings

  • Results from mobile weigh-bridge axle load controls in the region showed that the average number of overloaded vehicles reduced from about 9-10%, experienced during 1997/98, to about 2% from recent checks. This results in less damages of the road infrastructure and increases road safety.
  • Through the project improved standard planning procedures and drawings for electronic weigh-bridges were introduced to TANROADS.
