Kidatu Ifakara Road Project - Tanzania / RSSP Extension

Tanzania Kidatu Ifakara

The road from Kidatu to Ifakara is located southwest of Morogoro town in the province of Morogoro.

During Phase III of the SDC funded Morogoro Road Support Project,from 1996 to 1999, funds were allocated for the upgrading and sealing of limited sections of this road in order to minimise maintenance costs. However, as a result of road network damage resulting from the 1997/98 El Nino floods, the planned works were shelved and funds were reallocated to emergency works based on a 'spot improvement' approach.

During the visit of the SDC Director of Development in August 2001 to Morogoro, the Region through its Regional Commissioner, TANROADS and other stakeholders forwarded an official request to SDC to support the region with the rehabilitation and improvement of the Kidatu to Ifakara road.

As a result of this request and studies relating to the assessment of the economic and technical feasibility of various options SDC are currently providing finance to improve selected sections of the Kidatu-Ifakara Road from the Ruaha River to Ifakara.

The work currently programmed to be carried out under the Kidatu Ifakara Road project consists of the following:

  • 10 km of Kidatu Ifakara road to be upgraded and bitumen paved with an Otta Seal and sand seal;
  • 22 km of KIFA road to be rehabilitated by improvements to the drainage system, raising the embankment level and regravelling;
  • bridges at Kiberege and Sagamaganga to be replaced;
  • rehabilitation of up to 18 minor bridges.
