Rwanda is a landlocked country and the cost of bringing all imported goods by road from the ports of Mombasa in Kenya or Dar es Salaam in Tanzania is very high. In an effort to reduce this cost the Ministry of Infrastructure has commissioned ITECO, with partner companies Green and Clean Solutions of Rwanda and ITECO Consult Tanzania to investigate the feasibility of establishing an inland water transport link from a port on Lake Victoria along the Akagera (Kagera) River to Kagitumba in Rwanda. The project started in early 2010 and should be completed by the end of the year.
