The environmental laboratory is to be refurbished and laboratory equipment for the chemical and bacteriological analysis of samples, computer hardware and related software purchased and installed in the laboratory. The laboratory personnel are expected to process the hydrological and water quality data received, implement and maintain the data management system and to provide inputs to the preparation of the annual reports of the river monitoring systems.
The new laboratory equipment includes a high speed spectrophotometer, a TOC analyser, a Kjeldahl distillation system and a vacuum filtration system and a furnace. These new instruments will complement the equipment already present at the institute.
Training programmes reflecting the use of European standard water quality monitoring procedures have been established. Laboratory staff received training in laboratory operation and management together with the care and use of the new testing equipment. Hydrometric field staff obtain hands on experience in carrying out measuring, sampling and testing through training programs and field exercises. The staff responsible for data processing will be instructed in the setting up of the databases, the operation and maintenance of the new systems and the customising of the reporting to meet the requirements of management.
