In late May 2004 at Ohrid in Macedonia the inaugural Balwois conference was held. The conference was attended by over 270 people from 35 countries world wide. Over 200 papers and other items on hydrology, climatology and hydrobiology were presented.

The conference brought together people involved in all aspects of water management and water protection in the various countries of the Balkans.

Iteco and the Hydrometeorological Service of the Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning in Macedonia jointly presented a paper on the Rimsys project. In addition Iteco set up an 'info-tower' in the exhibition area to showcase not only Rimsys but activities of Iteco in other areas.

The Conference was supported by the European Commission, Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Macedonia, the French Embassy in Macedonia and the International Association of Hydrological Sciences.
