River Monitoring System in Macedonia; Rimsys

Rimsys - River monitoring

The River Monitoring System Project in Macedonia (RIMSYS) is a cooperation project between Switzerland and the FYR of Macedonia. It is designed to:

  • revitalise the national river monitoring system in Macedonia, including refurbishment and instrumentation of 11 remaining stations throughout the country;
  • implementation of a data river monitoring data management system;
  • production of yearbooks;
  • training of Macedonian staff in institutional and technical areas related to river monitoring including documentation of long term changes in the pollution levels of the important rivers in the country;
  • implement water quality - pollution regulation and control measures;
  • development of services including an Integrated Flood Forecasting, Warning and Response System; and
  • trust fund management for project funds.

Scope of the River Monitoring System

RIMSYS will revitalise the existing countrywide monitoring system. The system is currently not fully operational due to institutional shortcomings, insufficient funds and outdated and/or non operational field and laboratory equipment and data storage methods. The Rimsys project includes:

  • refurbishing of the 18 most important river monitoring stations countrywide, with: reconstruction works for the river monitoring stations, new hydrometric, water sampling and data logging equipment at stations, field equipment for calibration of measurements, laboratory equipment for chemical and bacteriological analysis of samples;
  • processing and publishing of hydrological and river water quality data including: development of institutional framework for data collection, implementation of database and data processing system, reporting in respective yearbooks and dissemination of information via web-based information system;
  • training of local staff in collection and management of data, working within an international (particularly European) framework of river water quality monitoring, as well as in related subjects such as hydrometry, chemical and bacteriological analysis and computer applications;
  • development of an integrated flood forecasting, warning and response system;
  • data dissemination and publication of historical data;
  • development of services; and
  • assisting in the development of a business plan for HMA (Implementing Agency).
